Suruga Hina Dolls

The following is an explanation of the processes involved in making the body of these dolls, which are mainly made in Shizuoka.

Stage One
Measuring, Cutting: Rice straw is bound with paper and left to dry before being cut into the required lengths.

Stage Two
Shaping: Next, it is cut to shape using a knife.

Body Assembly: Pieces of wire are threaded through the torso to make a core for the arms and legs. Cotton wool or other stuffing is used to give form to the limbs before they are covered with handmade Japanese paper.

Stage Four
Dressing: The dolls are then dressed and the clothes are padded out with cotton wool.

Stage Five
Bending the Arms: The arms are bent and arranged in the required position.

Fixing the Head: The head is then fitted to the body. However, because of a system of division of labor in Shizuoka, it is actually becoming more common to dispatch the bodies as they are without their heads.

Stage Seven
Finishing: Any accessories are attached to finish the doll.
