Traditional Crafts of Japan



In 1979, Japan Traditional Craft Center opened an exhibition hall to display representative objects of the traditional craft designated by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry. Here various projects are carried out to deepen consumers' understanding of traditional craft products.


Main Facilities of the Exhibition Hall

A Permanent Exhibition

About 130 craft items officially designated as "traditional craft products" are always on display. The items are representative of various regions, and displays are replaced continually.

B Special Exhibitions

Exhibitions of various categories are displayed for 2 weeks. Sometimes craftsmen demonstrate techniques.

C Reference library and videotape corner

D Information desk

E Craft clinic (advice about repairs, etc.)

F Membership club activities: newsletter publication; visits to craft production areas; classes in making crafts




Japan Traditional Craft Center: Access
The center is located close to Ikebukuro Station in central Tokyo.

>From the JR lines at Ikebukuro station, leave from the Metropolitan ticket barrier, and the entrance to the center can be accessed through the Tobu Department Store Plaza Hall.

>From the Tobu line, the center can be accessed directly from the south exit.

>From the Seibu Ikebukuro line and the subways lines at Ikebukuro station, go to ground level using the escalator in front of the Tobu Department Store Plaza Garden fountain. Then make your way to the Tobu Department Store Plaza Hall from where the center can be accessed.
